Organic natural latex makes the perfect metal free mattress. Latex mattresses are very trouble free and are recommended by chiropractors because they are flat and supportive. A high-quality luxury mattress that will last for many years, we recommend the Ramsey for children and lighter adults.
An Abaca Ramsey organic mattress is made by hand layering and stitching two layers of organic Welsh wool around a 15cm deep latex pad. It is hand tufted and has an organic cotton cover. A Ramsey organic mattress is 17/18 cms deep, can be made in any size, is available in soft, medium or firm, and guaranteed for 15 years.
Natural organic latex is made with sap from the Hevea Brasilensis (rubber tree) and is a natural alternative to memory foam. All our organic latex is certified to either FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) or GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard). For more information about these certification bodies please contact us. The whole mattress is certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard by the Soil Association and hand made in Wales.

No two people sleep in exactly the same way. Some of us sleep on our backs, others on their sides, and some on their tummies. There is lots of research that claims that sleeping on your side is best, because it takes the strain off the back and hips, and women tend to favour this position. It’s really important for side sleepers not to choose a mattress that’s too firm, as there needs to be plenty of give to support the curve of shoulder and hip.
Approximately ten to fifteen percent of the population sleep in their backs, and it can be problematic because it encourages snoring and sleep apnoea. However if that is your favoured position then a firmer mattress will help support your lower back.
If you sleep on your stomach you need to make sure that your mattress is always in tip top condition. If the mattress is too soft then your spine is thrown out of alignment and there isn’t enough support for your neck which can cause back pain.
Clearly the most important thing that affects quality of sleep is comfort, so ensuring that your mattress supports you properly is crucial. Weight plays a part when you’re making the decision about which type of mattress to buy, and the chart below is a guideline that will help you make a decision. At the heavier end of the scale it’s important to realise that a Firm mattress may need a topper so that there is both support and cushioning.

If you come and visit us we’ll do everything we can to ensure that you have enough time and space to choose the right mattress for you. But before you plan your visit here are some useful points to have a think about.
Showrooms can be intimidating places, especially on the high street. Lying down in front of strangers isn’t very comfortable for some people and the tendency is to make a hurried decision to get the whole thing over with. Sitting on the edge of a mattress isn’t going to give you any idea of what it’s going to feel like when you go to bed at night, and the tendency is to choose a mattress that’s too firm.

In line with our green credentials, we make mattresses from sustainable materials. These materials are all organic and natural, and we expect our mattresses to last a long time. Our guarantee covers you against faulty workmanship or materials and we hope that you will look after the mattress by turning it regularly, hoovering it occasionally and stripping the bed every now and again to let the mattress breathe.
No guarantee can cover the way that a mattress is used, so please be careful if you need to move your mattress from one room to another and when you’re turning it. A pocket sprung mattress must not be folded or allowed to flop under its own weight.
Peace of mind: Be smart, buy organic!
Buying a new mattress ought to be a pleasurable experience! As MD of Abaca I want you to be a satisfied and contented customer, so I make you the following pledges.
When you order from us we will spend as much time as you need discussing your prospective purchase. We have twenty years experience of manufacturing mattresses that are hand built for individual customers so we know exactly how each of the different materials we use behaves. When we put our experience together with your needs, you end up with exactly what’s best for you!
The person that takes your order will have responsibility for it all through the production and delivery process. You will be able to ask for that person by name.
If there is any extra information you need after the mattress has been delivered, the same person will deal with any questions you may have.
We have absolute confidence in our product and will give you great customer care. Some retailers offer ‘free’30-day, trials, but we offer you on- going customer care for the whole life of the mattress. Be smart, buy organic!

I simply cannot recommend Abaca highly enough! We bought our first mattress from you a few years back (after I had extensively researched all others on the market) and you exceeded expectations .The value of deep restful sleep cannot be overestimated. Now family members have bought three more mattresses and are absolutelutely delighted with them. The quality of your products are second to none! The very personal service from Abaca is amazing and I recommend anyone who is looking to buy a mattress to save yourself the trouble of looking anywhere else, you can rest assured with Abaca!
I purchased this mattress several years ago from a shop in Bristol. It felt the right level of firmness for me at the time. It's very well made and of high quality, but the sleep quality I had on it isn't great. I have to move my body a lot using this bed as it became uncomfortable for my back, and I don't have a particular back problem either. I don't know why it has this effect on my back but it's meant I've gotten just average sleep over the last few years. Because I paid so much for it and couldn't sell it I persevered for a few years. I am finally getting rid of it. The second thing about these mattresses is the combination of heavy weight and NO HANDLES!!! I am a fairly strong person and handling this thing is a struggle without handles. And when I got a loft bed, it was incredibly difficult getting this thing up onto the bed. For a mattress so heavy and not including handles is poor design thinking. I am reluctant to buy another latex based mattress again and I'm looking to get a high density pocket sprung one which I think will support the back better.
Hi Stefan, thank you so much for your feedback. Your message is a perfect example of why we no longer sell through third parties. The ability as a manufacturer to 'put things right' is so much greater when the customer is 'ours'. The discussions we have with customers before they place an order allow us to give great advice on what's likely to suit them best. And of course if it doesn't suit them then we can change it for something that does. It's a fair point about handles ... we only put them on if customers ask us to because there's no way of attaching them to anything except the outside cover. Putting undue strain on them can cause the fabric of the cover to pull away, so we can't guarantee a mattress that has handles on because we have no control over the way a mattress is used. Latex mattresses don't suit everyone, they are much flatter and firmer than a sprung mattress, and I'm really sorry you had a bad experience with ours. As a customer who has bought one of our products you would get a discount if you chose to buy from us again, do give us a ring if you'd like to chat about that.
Just to let you know that the truckle bed has been found to be super comfy. Daisy actually won’t sleep in her own bed now and sleeps on it every night because she loves it so much! No need to have put the wheels on. But it’s lovely to know she is sleeping on a chemical free and supportive mattress even though it’s just a truckle. Many thanks for the straps. They worked a treat.
Just wanted to let you know how much we love our new mattress.- especially Hattie ! Its just marvellous -adored it from day one !- didn’t take anytime to get used to it at all. The only bad thing is that I realise how long its been since I slept in such a comfy bed ! So lovely to have something so nice in these terrible times.
Four great reasons to buy organic
Why you should consider going organic when you sleep
Organic Mattresses Are Chemical Free
Conventional mattresses use a wide variety of chemicals during the manufacturing process and adhesives are often used to glue the layers of a mattress together. Not what you want to be sharing a bed with! Organic materials are produced without the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides and insecticides, and all the materials we use in our mattresses are either recyclable or biodegradable.
Organic Mattresses are a healthy option
In many cases, allergies and problems with the respiratory tract are aggravated by elements found in conventionally made mattresses, especially memory foam. We are at our most vulnerable in bed and don’t spend as long anywhere else from day to day. Investing in a mattress that doesn’t introduce any of these foreign elements into our sleeping environment is a healthy option! People who buy an Abaca mattress often call us to say that symptoms like runny noses, sneezing, coughing, and skin irritations are either significantly reduced or eliminated within just a few weeks of sleeping on the mattress.
Organic Mattresses help regulate your temperature
Man made materials make for very poor temperature regulation. Memory foam, for example, often becomes very hot at night, whereas the organic cotton and wool in every Abaca mattress wick moisture away from the body and help your body achieve restful sleep.
Organic Mattresses Are Sustainable
As a certified organic company we are very conscious of our carbon footprint. Every year 7.5 million mattresses go into landfill in the UK alone, so producing mattresses using materials that can be recycled is really important.
