We love having visitors to our showroom. Though it’s only a tiny percentage of the people that buy an Abaca mattress that make the journey to our Welsh workshop, it’s always lovely to meet prospective buyers.

But most people buy online, and to ensure that we meet their expectations we aim to have long and detailed conversations with them before they buy. Our founder, Rhiannon, has thirty plus years in the mattress industry which means she has lots of experience, and it’s usually her who will answer any questions or concerns you may have about buying an organic mattress. A good mattress will last for quite a long time, but when the time comes to replace it, what do you do? Some people head for the High Street, or one of the out of town shopping centres, because “It’s really important to try a mattress before buying it”. But is it?

By the time you arrive at your chosen destination, you’ve had to cope with a long drive, or crowded public transport. Showrooms are brightly lit and have salespersons who are keen to make a sale. You’ll have all your clothes on and lying down in public isn’t something that everyone is comfortable with. But you’re there now, and that nice gentleman or lady is keen to sell you the latest model, and it feels firm, but that’s good isn’t it?

The most common mistake that people make in a showroom is choosing a mattress that’s too firm or too soft for their weight. Showroom staff often have no idea of how a mattress is made and how it will respond to people of very different ages or weights. Especially when comparing against various mattress brands.

There is a common fallacy that sitting on the edge of a bed will somehow give you all the information you need to make an informed choice. It’s called the 30 second bounce and is perhaps the worst way possible to choose a new mattress!

By the time you’ve been in the showroom for fifteen minutes there creeps in a sense of ‘I need to make a decision’, and making a purchase when you feel under pressure leads to bad decisions.

So let’s take a deep breath and look at your options. Buying a mattress online may not be something you’ve done before, but it’s worth having a conversation before you make that journey to a showroom. Talking to someone in the comfort of your own home, for as long as you need will help you come to a decision about which mattress is likely to suit you best without you having to leave your home, and there’s absolutely no pressure to buy.
