Each mattress is made with generous layers of organic Welsh wool, which is naturally fire retardant, allowing it to pass the fire retardant test without the use of chemical fireproofing.

Wool/Horsehair Mattress

If there was just one fibre left in the world that you would want to have in a mattress that fibre would have to be wool! For centuries people have known that a wool mattress gives you a sleep experience which no other mattress can give.
Abaca’ s new wool mattresses are named for our favourite beaches in Pembrokeshire. The (Newgale) mattress is made entirely of organic wool with an organic cotton cover, has a traditional rolled edge, and is hand tufted. This type of mattress would have been common all over Europe at one time, but the increased use of manmade materials means that in recent years it’ s only been the discerning Italians who have retained the traditional skills which are necessary to produce them. Luckily for us we found someone who was willing to share those skills with us, and we’ re so pleased to be able to offer you this lovely mattress.
The (Nolton) mattress is made in a very similar way to the (Newgale), the only difference is the sturdy layer of horsehair which runs through the centre of the mattress. Adding horsehair to the wool gives this mattress a different feel, it is slightly firmer but also slightly bouncier!
These mattresses are entirely handmade and uniquely in the UK we are offering a service which means that your new wool mattress can last a lifetime. Five years after the purchase date, and every five years thereafter, we will offer to collect your mattress and bring it back to our factory in Wales. The wool will be removed, cleaned, re-carded and if necessary more will be added; the mattress will be re-made and returned to you within seven days. This service will cost 20% of the original purchase price.
In the UK we send about seven million mattresses a year to landfill, and since we’ re now being told that we should change our mattresses every seven years, that’ s ten mattresses that each of us is potentially adding during our life time

Natural Latex mattresses

Rhossili 18cm natural latex wrapped in layers of organic mohair and wool (Firmness 5/10)

The Rhossili mattress is named after one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK. The Gower peninsula isnít far from where Abaca is based, and we thought that naming this mattress for one of its stunning beaches was a real tribute to both beach and mattress!

If you want a latex mattress which is both soft and supportive the Rhossili is the one for you. 15cms of medium latex is sandwiched between two pieces of soft latex and the whole thing is then securely sewn into two layers of a wool/mohair blend. The Chester is a great favourite with our customers because it combines pocket springs and latex in one luxurious mattress. We have upgraded it from March 1st 2013 so that it now contains fourteen hundred springs rather than a thousand. All our mattresses are made by hand, and the numerous layers in this lovely mattress are carefully put together to ensure a fantastic nightís sleep. The latex layers make this mattress feel quite different from our other pocket sprung mattresses, so if you enjoy the support that latex gives combined with the ëbounceí of springs, then this is the mattress for you. Our organic cot mattress is made from a resilient core of coconut fibre (coir) bonded with a small amount of natural latex. Layers of our heaviest wool are added on either side to build the cot to its finished depth, and then a wrap of wool is hand sewn around to hold everything in place. An organic cotton cover encases the mattress. A cot mattress can also be custom made to fit that much loved cot which has been carefully stored for years. Again, this mattress can be custom made to fit any size childís bed.

We like to do things a little differently at Abaca. A little while ago a customer asked if we could customise a mattress for his daughter, and after a lot of thinking we came up with the idea of embroidering her name on her new mattress. It worked brilliantly, and we now offer that service to anyone who would like a moses basket, a cot mattress or a single bed mattress embroidered with their child’s name. We make a small charge of £5 to cover our costs, and you have a choice of pink, blue, or green stitching.

Abaca mattress pads add layers of natural organic materials to your existing mattress. Whether you want to bring a bit of organic luxury to your bedroom, or simply add layers to extend the life of an old mattress, an Abaca mattress pad will fit the bill.

The wool mattress pad is made from two layers of medium weight organic Welsh wool encased in an organic cotton cover. Each pad is finished by hand stitching the layers together. It can be made deeper by the addition of more layers of wool, and custom made to fit a non standard size bed.

Latex mattress pads are made using one or two layers of 3cm deep latex with a wraparound of organic wool which is hand stitched. The cover is made with 100% organic cotton and is hand tufted. These pads are either around 5cm deep (one layer of latex) or approximately 8cms deep (two layers of latex).

A handmade oak bed needs to be a classic. It needs to be beautiful and simple. It is a piece of furniture which should be designed to be timeless because it will last for many years to come.

It is an intrinsic part of our ethos to produce high quality products that are made as sustainably as possible, and this means that we have looked very carefully at where our oak is sourced.

An oak tree is a venerable thing; it can live for many hundreds of years. Many of our individual oak trees in the UK are protected by tree preservation orders, but the great forests have all but disappeared so sustainable English Oak is almost impossible to source in any quantity.

Across the channel the French have been encouraging forestry production since the 16th Century. They have had a controlled forest management system in place since 1827 which has not only enabled a market in commercially sustainable oak to develop but also inspired more modern global schemes such as the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.

Mature oak trees with trunks of between eight and ten feet in diameter which are around a hundred and twenty years old are felled and new trees planted as part of a multi generational cycle that ensures the continuity of both forest and supply of wood. These trees are ëQuercus Roburí, the same species of Oak indigenous to the UK, renowned for its rich colour and grain.

We have therefore chosen to have our Oak beds made from French Oak to ensure that it is properly matured and responsibly forested.

Our beds made by Broadleaf, the real wood specialists, who share our passion for craftsmanship, quality, sustainably sourced natural materials and whose workshops are located close to our own here in Wales.

In conjunction with Broadleaf we have created classic designs that will blend seamlessly with the spectrum of bedroom styles. Each one is traditionally hand built in time honored fashion and hand finished with a natural, durable, low VOC hard wax oil in your choice of Broadleafís beautiful signature shades - Nude, Classic, Aged, Warm Oak, Rich Oak and Dark Oak.

Rustic Range

This range of beds is all that one would want from a traditionally made oak bed. Beautifully made and substantial pieces of furniture, they would grace any bedroom. The beds in this range are the Radnor, Tenby and Pembroke.

Milford Range

If what youíre looking for is a sleeker version of our rustic range, then the Milford beds are just what you need. This range gives you the option of no headboard, a frame which is made to sit under the mattress, and smaller legs. The beds in this range are Usk, Dovey and Severn.

Divan bases have become a bit old fashioned, and not everyone wants (or has space for) a wooden bed, so what's the alternative?

Abaca has come up with a sleek new product that gives you all the benefits of the divan without the bulkiness. The Cambria upholstered base has a frame of FSC timber and solid oak legs. The frame is traditionally upholstered using layers of horsehair and wool, and the cover is a sturdy herringbone twill. No springs are used in its construction making this a great buy for those who prefer a metal free bed. Hand made in our unit in Wales, each base comes with a ten year guarantee and can be made in varying heights and to your exact dimensions. All standard sizes are also available.

Headboards are such a personal thing! Alan Watson has been making them for many years and will be delighted to help you select the right shape and finish. Click here for more information www.weavewoodandwatson.co.uk
