We produce two types of mattress:
Pocket-Sprung
Metal free natural latex

Both types are available in a range              of standard sizes, or custom made to          your own specification.

Pocket-Sprung (Snowdon)
Mattresses are built up of layers of materials with different properties to give you the right combination of support and comfort. The ABACA Snowdon mattress features several brand new organic wool products combining durability and comfort and are available in standard or firm versions.
Latex (Ramsay)
This ABACA mattress is entirely metal free and is produced using high quality, natural latex, which has not been treated with fire retardant. The latex is wrapped in several layers of organic Welsh wool and finished with an organic cotton cover. We cannot claim full organic status for this mattress yet as the certification process for the latex is still ongoing.
Mattress Pads
Mattress pads are used for a variety of reasons- warmth, comfort or simply to give a new lease of life to an older mattress. Our organic mattress pad also brings you the reassurance of sleeping on completely pure untreated materials. Organic wool is covered by a 100% organic cotton cover- no chemicals and no pesticide residues! ABACA mattress pads can be made to any shape or size and additional layers of wool can be added to suit personal preference.
Cot Mattress
Babies deserve the very best start in life, so ABACA have worked to the exacting standards of the Soil Association to produce a safe, high quality product.

A sturdy core of coir (coconut fibre) and natural latex is wrapped with a deep layer of wool, and finished with a cotton cover. The combination of wool and cotton means that no fireproofing chemicals have been used in the production process. Just pure, clean, organic materials.

How to choose the mattress that's right for you
Choosing the right mattress is an important part of ensuring that you get a good nights sleep. Abaca has two types of mattress which support you in different ways. Both mattresses are hand made to the highest standard and are thoroughly checked before they leave our workshop. The best way of deciding which mattress you want to buy is to think carefully about what sort of bed you are sleeping on now, and what has prompted you to change.

If you are sleeping on something that’s very soft and has assumed your shape over the years then any change is going to be a shock to the system! Equally, if you have been sleeping on an un-sprung mattress such as a futon you will be accustomed to a very hard un-yielding surface, and again, moving to a mattress with more ‘give’ will initially feel very strange. Your new mattress will have a flat surface and will probably feel completely different to your previous bed to begin with, but will soon have you wondering why on earth you put up with your old bed for so long!

A pocket spring mattress contains lots of small springs which are individually pocketed. Unlike a traditional wire coil spring (called a bonnell unit) pocket springs are not attached to each other and therefore there is far less movement in the mattress than there is in a bonnell unit. It feels denser and more supportive.

Abaca sells two types of pocket unit, which we call ‘firm’ and ‘standard’. If you and your partner are of very un-equal weights then a pocket spring is a good option because there is less likelihood of one person disturbing the other when turning over. A firm mattress is best if you and/or your partner are on the heavy side, likewise, choose a standard if you are fairly light. Unfortunately there are no comparative standards in the mattress industry, one company’s firm mattress will be another company’s extra firm and a third company will call exactly the same spring orthopaedic. Our pocket units contain about a 1,000 springs in the 5’ x 6’6 size and feature ‘butterfly clips’ which support the wire frame giving extra stability.

Latex mattresses are metal free. The absence of springs means that once the mattress is made there is nothing inside that can go wrong. Our latex is an entirely natural product which comes from the rubber tree and the 15cm deep pad within your mattress is soft yet resilient. Your body is cushioned gently by the mattress which allows the pressure points of shoulder, back and hip to ‘give’ while supporting the rest of your body. Sleeping on latex is a completely different experience to sleeping on any kind of sprung mattress. There is absolutely none of the movement that one experiences with springs, all in all it’s a very comfortable experience indeed!

Please don’t waste your money by putting a new mattress on an uneven base. It is important that it is properly supported; slats should be no more than 2” or 5cms apart.
